Grey Waters was a side project of Tim Yatras (Germ, Blackened Angel, Ilium) and D. (Woods Of Desolation) Both men, having a black metal influenced background, came together in 2010 to put out Grey Waters first and only release, Below the Ever Setting Sun. Since first listen, this is an EP that I have been truly stuck on. It draws influences from the black metal both men are known for, as well as some melodic metal riffing and post metal instrumentation as well. The singing is a mixture of clean singing , with some black metal screams backing. All songs are extremely well made, with very catchy sounding instrumentation. Of course, this material is a drastic shift from what these men are known for, and if you are not open to anything but metal, you may be disappointed here. The lyrics are pretty depressing and can be argued to be “emo”-ish, but I think they fit the style very well. My favorite track is Broken, which starts as an upbeat sounding track, that does eventually bring in that black metal backing vocals and bursts into an epic piece that is worth the price of the EP alone. I recommend that if you are into any of those alternative black metal genres, and have respect for the great musicians who have come together to give you a different experience, by all means check this EP out.
