The Ghost is Before The Dawn’s 3rd album, and pretty much the album that directs the sound of the band throughout the remainder of their career, as well as most of Saukkonen’s many other bands that follow. First off, for this album, Saukkonen ended up firing the entire band and got a whole new band to perform this album. Before The Dawn had always been his “solo” work, in which he would find musicians that would help perform the music, yet all writing was done by him. 4:17am is Before The Dawn’s sophomore album, and is another good effort by the band. This album does give you more of the same sound as My Darkness, their first album, but is a little more refined. I do believe the album has a better sound to it, if even by a small margin. Panu Willman’s vocals have improved quite a bit, which his voice sounds much more solid and carries better. As I sit here and reminisce about all of the music I have grown with over many years, Before The Dawn is definitely a band that comes to mind. I usually think about their newer albums and how the band has developed over the years, but when you go back to their roots and the debut album My Darkness you can still find some worthwhile music.
