Beirut – Gulag Orkestar

Beirut’s debut album, Gulag Orkestar, is a pretty interesting album with a unique sound. The main composer and vocalist, Zach Condon, dropped out of high school and decided to travel to Europe. There, he became interested in Balkan music and, upon his return to the United States, wrote Gulag Orkestar. The eleven tracks that make up this album all tend to have the same general style. Gulag Orkestar primarily consists of Balkan folk music, which includes plenty of accordions, trumpets, ukuleles, among other instruments. (more…)
