Les Discrets – Ariettes Oubliées…

Les Discrets’ debut album Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées was an outstanding piece of art and now one of my favorite albums of all time. It would surely be a difficult task to even come close to duplicating the quality of that album, but Fursy Teyssier of Les Discrets and crew came very close to accomplishing that feat with Ariettes Oubliées…. Les Discrets sound continues to be difficult to describe, although it tends to lean towards post-black metal with elements of shoegaze, even though the band has no relation to black metal. (more…)

Alcest – Écailles de Lune

Alcest are among the leaders in this wave of post-black metal/shoegaze bands and their sophomore album, Écailles de Lune, is definitely a classic album in this growing sub-genre. Alcest’s first full-length album, Souvenirs D’un Autre Monde, did not have much, if any, metal on it; however, that is not the case with Écailles de Lune. This second album offers a great balance between dreamy soundscapes and elements more commonly associated with black metal. The dreamy atmosphere permeates throughout each of the tracks that make up this album. Each track is similar in style. However, although the individual tracks may not necessarily stand (more…)

Underling – Breath Deeply (EP)

Underling is a post-black/atmospheric black metal group from Los Angeles, California consisting of 3 members, Alex Hernandez-Bent, Antonio Palermo, and Robert Morey. Breath Deeply is the 2nd EP by the band, and where I got my first taste of this great mixture of genres, consisting of black metal infused screaming vocals, and also post-metal/black metal hybrid mixture of instrumentation. This is a solid release. There are 4 tracks total, with all of the tracks unified at 6 1/2 to 7 minutes in length. Starting with Guided, the EP starts right off with some post-metal style instrumentation and profound drumming. It then throws Palermo’s vocals into the mix, which to me are a (more…)

Odzew – Odzew (EP)

Originating from Poland, Odzew is a new, fresh project by a single person, Damian Andrzejczuk, who has only previously done various soundtracks for video games. This first release from his project, also called Odzew, is a 3 track EP of instrumental post-black metal songs. How does it fare? Well, it is pretty good. (more…)
