Les Discrets – Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées

Les Discrets’ Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées album was probably my favorite album of 2010—an album I accidentally stumbled upon and thankfully decided to randomly download. This French band is difficult to classify. Post-black metal? Post-rock? Shoegaze? Whatever they are, Fursy Teyssier has composed some amazing music. The music on this album can be described as atmospheric, dark, dreamy, ethereal, enchanting, mysterious—interesting descriptions for an album exploring the essence of death. The dreamy atmosphere permeates throughout each of the tracks that make up this album. Each track is similar in style. However, although the individual tracks may not necessarily stand out, the album as a whole does, and it is quite a listening experience. When I first discovered this band, I listened to this album everyday for several weeks as it basically took me to another world with its soundscapes. The album begins with an ambient, instrumental opener before leading into L’échappée, which is representative of the general sound on Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées. The song has plenty of mesmerizing and dreamy guitar melodies coupled with Teyssier’s soothing vocals. Much of the songs have these attributes. There is a nice interplay between electric and acoustic guitar. Other songs, such as Les feuilles de l’olivier and Effet de nuit, are a little heavier, particularly the former, which even has some blast beats from drummer Winterhalter. Audrey Hadorn provides some backing female vocals on a number of tracks. Song for Mountains is an epic piece that embodies the essence of this album. Chanson d’automne is my favorite track, which is quite dreamy and has some enchanting guitar melodies in the middle. Finally, this amazing album closes with the more optimistic Une matinée d’hiver. Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées is an album I very highly recommend for those seeking dark atmospheric music.
