Oranssi Pazuzu – Valonielu

It is refreshing to see bands take a genre, constrained by certain parameters, and experiment to explore new directions. Finland’s Oranssi Pazuzu has taken black metal into extra-stellar realms. On Valonielu, Oranssi Pazuzu has expanded on their form of psychedelic, experimental black metal and has combined black metal, stoner rock, and space rock into a cohesive whole. While listening to this album, it feels like being in a brightly multi-colored forest on an alien planet with black metal’s signature vocals and screams as the only sign of sentient life. The opening track, Vino Verso, is indicative of the direction and style of the album. It consists of fairly repetitive guitar accompanied by electronic spacey sound effects and some form of psychedelic black metal. Vocalist Jun-His’ lyrics are entirely in Finnish and consist of typical shrill black metal screeches and shrieks. The keyboards, rather than the stereotypical winter atmosphere, give an otherworldly atmosphere to the album. Tyhjä Tempelli is another good track that makes use of interesting guitar effects, while Reikä Maisemassa is a space ambient track similar to early Tangerine Dream, but with a more metal atmosphere. Although Valonielu has an interesting theme and atmosphere, the songs may be quite repetitive. Each song is generally distinct, but each song basically consists of the same parts repeating for the duration of the song, even as other elements within the song build and climax. This does give the album a slight hypnotic effect, but the repetition may lose those with shorter attention spans. Valonielu is a solid album overall and should be of interest for those looking for some more experimental black metal that strays from cold winter wastes and ventures towards other worlds.
